Site Reliability Test

Site reliability engineering (SRE) is a discipline that incorporates aspects of software engineering and applies them to infrastructure and operations problems. The main goals are to create scalable and highly reliable software systems. SRE essentially involves creating a bridge between development and operations. SRE’s approach is applying a software engineering mindset to system administration areas.

Question:

You're working on a pipeline with a series of stages, where you defined an SLO per stage. You've noticed end-to-end data corruption, which wasn't detected, where the user isn't seeing the data being passed from an upstream job. The cause for this is:

Options

  • You should implement multiple SLOs per stage instead of using only one, which would allow detection for such bugs.
  • The SLOs must be incorrectly defined since this type of SLO measurement should capture the end-to-end health of your system.
  • There is nothing wrong with the measured SLOs and the way of detecting the errors.
  • The upstream stage is passing data that a downstream job isn't expecting and just omits it. Since you were using per-stage SLOs, there was no way the system could detect this as both stages believed they were performing correctly. You should only measure the SLO for the sum of all stages.
