Dispatchers are communications personnel responsible for receiving and transmitting pure and reliable messages, tracking vehicles and equipment, and recording other important information. A number of organizations, including police and fire departments, emergency medical services, motorcycle couriers, taxicab providers, trucking companies, railroads, and public utility companies, use dispatchers to relay information and coordinate their operations. 


Essentially, the dispatcher is the conductor of the force and is responsible for the direction of all units within it.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Receives incoming telephone calls regarding service malfunctions and repairs
  • Providing exceptional customer service to clients at all times
  • Customer follow-up to determine satisfaction levels
  • Schedule and dispatch service technicians to customers' homes/businesses
  • Obtain information from the caller to determine the nature of the problem, and assess the status
  • Prioritize calls and dispatches to appropriate maintenance/repair crews for investigation and repair
  • Coordinate repair and maintenance with other departments and contractors
  • Maintain related records on the disposition of repair and maintenance
  • Research data relating to service problems
  • Utilize departmental records and maps to ensure crew dispatch to the correct location
  • Maintain radio contact with repair crews through the completion of assigned projects
  • Act as a liaison person with other utilities during repairs or in the event of utility damage
  • Generate computerized work orders for repair and maintenance requests
  • Dispatch vehicles to licensed operators
  • Review vehicle checks sheets and sub-pool dispatch worksheets for accuracy
  • Initiate vehicle rental agreements assuring completeness and accuracy
  • Assure rental vehicles are inspected for serviceability and cleanliness when returned
  • Operate public conveyance vehicles as required
  • Resolve vehicle dispatch and rental issues with customers.
